Wear of fluorapatite single crystals: IV. Influence of sliding direction on frictional behavior and surface failure.

چکیده
Preliminary studies of the wear of fluorapatite single crystals subjected to sliding neglected the possible influence of crystallographic direction on the frictional behavior and surface failure of the basal plane.1-3 In these studies, possible anisotropic effects were considered to contribute to the experimental error in the analysis of the data. Buckley4 has observed that friction coefficients (with limited plowing components) for a number of metals in sliding contact with other metals were lowest on the preferred slip or glide plane in the preferred slip direction. The anisotropy of surface failure has been discussed to a limited extent by Steijn5 for sapphire and by Bowden. Brookes, and Hanwell6 and Bowden and Brookes7 for magnesium oxide single crystals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate

Wear of fluorapatite single crystals. VI. Influence of multiple-pass sliding on surface failure.
One approach to a fundamental study of the wear of a material is to investigate the frictional behavior and surface failure of a simplified system, such as single crystals, under conditions of single-pass sliding. Such an approach has been used to study the influence of sliding direction and environment on the surface failure of fluorapatite single crystals.1.2 A useful extension of this single...

In recent years, several investigations of the environment-sensitive mechanical behavior of certain crystalline, nonmetallic materials and glasses have been directed toward characterizing the wear behavior of these materials under conditions of sliding and drilling in active liquid environments. Buckley,' for example, examined the change in plastic deformation and friction coefficient of single...

Historically, the study of the wear of hard dental tissues in modern man has been limited to clinical observation of physiologic and pathologic conditions that lead to wear, and to attempts to duplicate the effects of hygienic procedures such as the use of toothbrush and dentifrice on hard dental tissues in the laboratory. However, several fundamental investigations have been reported in which ...
متن کاملWear of fluorapatite single crystals. I. A method for quantitative evaluation of wear.
The effect of dentifrices and toothbrushing on the wear of enamel, exposed dentin, and cementum has been the topic of extensive experimental research.1-3 Little attempt has been made, however, to study the mechanisms that control the surface failure of enamel under an applied stress that results primarily from sliding. To identify the wear phenomenon of enamel at the level of slip or cleavage i...

It is a convenient approximation to regard the frictional forces between two solids as made up of two components: the force required to shear adhering junctions in the region of surface contact and the force required to deform the underlying bulk material.' With an elastic solid, the deformation component may be due mainly to an elastic hysteresis loss; but if plastic flow occurs, the deformati...
